Discover highlights from the Africa Scientifique Programme Alumni Spotlight and learn how our Alumni, with the help of their mentors, are making a meaningful difference in their communities.

“Presenting your ideas to friends or peers may not be difficult, but when you share your ideas with established experts and the general public, it can be challenging. Despite this, I was able to present my ideas without fear, thanks to the Africa Scientifique programme. It helped me build my confidence and sharpen my science communication skills, teaching me how to present math ideas to solve sanitary issues for girls clearly and concisely. I found this skill important when I was engaging the audiences during the poster presentation.”  Helen Tizazu Fekede

2024 Africa Scientifique Programme AIMS Participants at Muizenberg Community Event

In honor of Nelson Mandela International Day, the 2024 Africa Scientifique Programme Post-Workshop AIMS participants, in collaboration with Muizenberg Library, launched a Mathematics Expo-Tutorial for Grade 8-11 learners in Muizenberg and surrounding areas in July 2024. These sessions aim to inspire students by demonstrating that mathematics can be both exciting and relevant to real-life applications—a solution rather than a problem.

Held on Saturdays at Muizenberg Library, the sessions allow learners to engage with AIMS students who serve as role models and mentors, making math accessible and enjoyable.

Africa Scientifique Alumni at 2022 National Science Week Launch  - July 31, 2022

Everlyn Chimoto, a PhD student and 2021 AS Alumna, showcased her science communication Lugha Yetu (Izilimi Zethu) project at the 2022 South Africa National Science Week (NSW) launch. Held at Mangosuthu University of Technology’s Umlazi Campus, the event was inaugurated by Minister Dr. Blade Nzimande.

Everlyn engaged attendees with hands-on activities like Origami, making science accessible to learners, teachers, and the public.

A parent at the event shared, “Angizazi izibalo kodwa ngifuna ukufunda ukuze ngifundise ingane yami” (“I don’t know mathematics, but I want to learn so I can teach my child”).

Reflecting on her experience, Everlyn said, “My experience at NSW was definitely not what I expected. We prepared materials on machine learning, NLP, and Artificial Intelligence, but the students found it challenging to connect with these concepts. Instead, the audience enjoyed learning about Geometry and Topology through our demonstrations. Overall, NSW was a valuable opportunity to learn how to communicate research to a lay audience."
