2020 Activities

Below are our 2020 upcoming and past in-house and community outreach activities, which promote mathematical science, advance women in science, and engage broader non-scientific communities. In response to the challenges posed by COVID-19, the House of Science adapted its programmatic activities by launching several online initiatives starting in March 2020. These include the AIMS Women in STEM Mentoring and Networking Webinar Series, which empowers women in mathematical sciences to share knowledge and support each other, and the Après-Lunch with Mathematical Scientist Webinar Series, designed to connect graduate students with inspiring role models from academia and industry, particularly from historically disadvantaged institutions. Additionally, we launched a blog to bridge the gap between mathematical science and society through research dissemination and community outreach.

🌟 Call for Entries - AIMS House of Science Blog

Have you ever wondered how you could intersect your writing and mathematical skills to engage with the broader community? This is an exciting opportunity for you to contribute in bridging the gap between mathematical science and society through research dissemination and community outreach! ✍️🔢

We invite informative and engaging contributions from graduates and emerging and established researchers in the field of Mathematical Sciences. Your submitted articles will be featured on the House of Science blog, reaching a wide audience eager to learn more!

Should you be interested, we request you contribute a written article to the blog. The article can be pitched as described in the author's guidelines below:

📅 Proposed Topic for June 2020 Blog:

Decolonisation of Knowledge in Africa Through the Lens of Mathematics

One of the highlights of the year 2015 was students’ movement on decolonising knowledge in institutions of higher learning in South Africa. The decolonisation of the knowledge agenda remains crucial today. It should not only be a vehicle for rewriting historical narratives, but also to correct the ills of the past concerning the oppressed, and champion the production of knowledge that is relevant to Africans.

The recent European Network of Science Centers and Museums (Ecsite) webinar, which was attended by more than 500 people across the globe, presented an example in one’s memory. The webinar - ‘Decolonizing museums and science communication’ - included an exemplar of decolonisation of the knowledge of mathematics in Africa (The Ishango Bone) by the president of African Gong, Dr Elizabeth Rasekoala. What other examples, stories, or decolonised narratives concerning Mathematics in Africa do you wish to share on our blog?

📅 Proposed Topic for July 2020 Blog:

The role of mathematical sciences research in modelling the COVID-19 Pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in the loss of millions of lives and/or sources of livelihood around the globe. Innovative ideas such as vaccines and/or a cure are currently implemented to find solutions to the pandemic. Mathematical sciences research has a critical role to play. Many scientists such as virologists, biological scientists, and epidemiologists across the world have been working tirelessly to model this disease in order to understand the infection rates, predict outcomes, and to come up with better interventions. Amid the scramble for solutions, we would like to hear about your own research on COVID-19 and how it will impact society.
