AIMS Public Lectures Series

The Public Lecture Series offers a platform for scientists to share discoveries and engage with the Muizenberg community and beyond. These lectures explore pressing topics in science, technology, innovation, and environmental issues while highlighting practical applications of mathematics in everyday life.

Some lectures are often followed by a collaborative and hands-on workshop or fireside chats, where speakers and participants engage deeply, fostering practical learning and meaningful connections.

The talks are held bimonthly in the AIMS Lecture Hall. They begin at 19:00 (the doors open at 18:45). Attendance is free, and participants can enjoy an occasional snack as part of the experience.

Title: Folding Numbers - Mathematics meets Origami

Speaker: Dr Michael Winckler, Interdisciplinary Center for Scientific Computing (IWR), Heidelberg University

Description: Origami, the traditional Japanese art of folding paper, has strong connections to mathematics. The link between these two topics is mutual: On the one hand, folding paper models leads to interesting mathematical questions. On the other hand, mathematical research of the last 30 years greatly influenced origami models, yielding complex designs that got realized in folded paper.

In this event we want to introduce the audience to the topic in two stages: First, a public lecture on the topic raises awareness for this link between mathematics and origami. We showcase examples of mathematically influenced models of paper folding and explain concepts behind the design. In a small folding workshop, all participants are then invited to try their hands on paper folding and to produce an own model to take home with them.

The AIMS Public Lecture Series is an engaging platform where science intersects with the community. This series invites leading scientists and innovators to share their groundbreaking discoveries and discuss important topics in science, technology, innovation, and environmental issues.

Designed to inspire and inform, the lectures highlight the practical applications of mathematics in everyday life, making complex ideas accessible and relevant to everyone. Additionally, many sessions include interactive workshops or intimate fireside chats, providing attendees with the opportunity to collaborate with experts, deepen their understanding, and build meaningful connections.

The lectures are held bimonthly at the AIMS Lecture Hall, starting at 19:00 (with doors opening at 18:45). Attendance is completely free, and participants are occasionally treated to snacks, adding a warm touch to the experience.

Whether you are a curious individual, an aspiring scientist, or simply eager to explore new ideas, the AIMS Public Lecture Series promises an evening filled with inspiration, connection, and discovery. Don’t miss out—join us for the next session!
