2019 Activities

Here is the list of the House of Science's upcoming and past in-house and community outreach activities from 2019 that we organized or participated in. These activities promote mathematical science, advance women in science, and engage the broader non-scientific communities.

SAWMSA Launch & Workshop: Harnessing the Leadership and Agency of Women in the Field for the Transformation Agenda, 6-7 June 2019

The South African Women in Mathematical Sciences Association (SAWMSA), in collaboration with the University of South Africa (UNISA), the Department of Mathematics Education and the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences (AIMS South Africa), plans to conduct a two-day Workshop on Harnessing the Leadership and Agency of Women in the Field for the Transformation Agenda. The workshop to be held on 6-7 June 2019 at UNISA Sunnyside Campus (Building 4, Rooms 3B  AND 4A) in Pretoria aims to bring together at least 60 postgraduate female students, researchers and academics in mathematical sciences and mathematics education from higher education institutions in South Africa to discuss their research and career development in a supportive environment.

Partially supported by a grant from the International Mathematical Union Commission for Developing Countries (IMU-CDC) and the National Research Foundation of South Africa, the workshop will feature presentations by dynamic African women STEM leaders, researchers and academics together with reflective, insightful and engaging interactive various activities and sessions that will stimulate dialogue and encourage collaboration, peer-peer learning, sharing and relationship building amongst the participants. The specific objectives of the workshop include:

WORKSHOP AIMS & GOALS:

The goal of this workshop is to enhance the participants’ skills, knowledge, networks, and information systems in climate change research, gender representation, science communication, and public engagement so they can progress on the path towards advanced further studies in STEM fields and boost their progression in academia and research, in South Africa.

For more information:

📢The WAFIRA programme, which was scheduled to be held at AIMS from July 31 to August 2nd, 2019, in celebration of the 2019 edition of South African Women’s Month and National Science Week, has been postponed to 2020. An added value to postponing to 2020 is that we will be able to deliver a richer multi-dimensional programme, as we would be better positioned to bring on board additional funding and stakeholders.
