The House of Science at AIMS South Africa offers an overarching innovation space for advancing public science communication/outreach and gender equity, diversity and inclusion in STEM. Its goal is transformation and societal development, and it adds value and enrichment to the AIMS academic and research programmes. House of Science also provides mentoring and capacity building to enhance and up-scale AIMS students and researchers in research dissemination and community outreach.
Flagship Capacity-Building Activities
Africa Scientifique is a three-phased, unique programme designed to support and provide young and emerging African scientists, researchers, and academics with leadership, knowledge, and skills for impactful science communication. It is jointly delivered in partnership with African Gong.
Women Advancement Forum International Exchanges, Research & Academia aims to foreground and empower African women in mathematical sciences as leaders and agents for the advancement of their studies and career progressions across academia, research, and industry. It is jointly delivered in partnership with African Gong.
Targeting the AIMS students, the Gender in STEM Mentoring aims to create a supportive and inclusive environment that fosters mentorship from caring senior students, facilitates networking with successful STEM professionals, including AIMS alumni, and actively promotes the participation of women and girls in STEM careers.
Added Value Enrichment Activities
Public Lecture Series: Science & Society Engagement
The AIMS Public Lecture Series aims to provide an opportunity for scientists to share discoveries, engage with the broader community in Muizenberg and surrounding areas on pressing scientific, technological, innovation, and environmental issues, and share practical, useful applications of mathematics in everyday life.
Participation in Science Festivals
AIMS hosts National Science Week through the House of Science and participates in the exhibition stand at science festivals and forums. This aims to showcase AIMS's work to the broader community in South Africa, foster excitement in the wonder of mathematics, and inspire more young people to pursue STEM studies and careers.
Community engagement and enrichment through mathematics are integral to the AIMS mission. In addition to conducting cutting-edge research, AIMS students and researchers are expected to engage with the wider community to promote mathematics, empower the next generation of mathematicians, and inspire positive change.
